The American Meteorological Society (AMS) releases the State of the Climate in ­­­­­2021 report. “An international, peer-reviewed publication released each summer, the (report) is the authoritative annual summary of the global climate published as a supplement to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.”

Compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) with contributions from scientists worldwide, State of the Climate in ­­­­­2021 provides an update on global climate indicators, notable weather events, and other data collections.

State of the Climate in ­­­­­2021 is the 32nd issuance of the annual assessment, published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society since 1996. “As a supplement to the Bulletin, its foremost function is to document the status and trajectory of many components of the climate system.” Key chapters in the report include:

  • The Tropics

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) presents a new webinar entitled “Impacts of Climate Change on Western Fires and Drought.” Numerous scientific studies warn that climate change is a critical cause for the increasing intensity of wildfire and drought in recent years.

During the AMS webinar, Dr. Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist and station manager at the University of California, Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Laboratory, explains how an increasingly warming climate is leading to the deadly and destructive natural disasters of wildfire and drought throughout California and other regions.

The University of California, Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Laboratory (CSSL) or “Central Sierra Snow Lab” is a research field station specializing in snow physics, snow hydrology, meteorology, climatology, and instrument design. CSSL features one of the best instrumented snow study sites in the world.

Climate Change and Probable Impact on Global Monsoons and Regional Components

The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS) article Monsoons Climate Change Assessment reviews “the current state of knowledge of climate change and its impacts on the global monsoon and its regional components.” The article addresses past monsoon changes and primary drivers, projected future changes, and key physical processes. Further, the authors discuss challenges of both past and future modeling and outlooks. As the article focuses on monsoon rainfall over land versus over sea, the content is critical for infrastructure stakeholders.

Monsoon rainfall on land (LMR) is invaluable, providing water resources for greater than two-thirds of the global population. Accordingly, accurate prediction of LMR is critical for our communities worldwide. Further, climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events. In contrast, “…models also project prolonged dry spells between heavy rains,” increasing the risk of droughts in monsoon regions. Extreme rainfall events also contribute to compound events and cascading impacts, such as tropical cyclones, sea-level rise, and land conditions.
